Join A Judicial Conversation This Semester! 1st Up 9.12.23

Have you looked through Symplicity and noticed several Judicial Events? The Career Center will be hosting multiple Judicial Conversations throughout the Fall Semester. These events are small group discussions with judges from across the country who will be discussing their role in the judiciary as well as their path to the bench. From State courts to Bankruptcy to Federal District Courts, the conversations will vary and will provide more clarity into what clerking for a judge would entail.

Every year students gain clerkships through these conversations, whether it be directly with the visiting Judge or with someone else in their district or level. These conversations are a unique opportunity to hear exactly what judges are looking for in applications and in their future clerks. It will also help you work through the nerves of speaking with a judge in an interview.

Join the kick-off event on September 12, 2023 at 12 pm with Judge Karen Specie, a US Bankruptcy Court Judge for the Northern District of Florida. Many of these events will be virtual so you can log in from wherever you are. If you are on campus and need a quiet place to log in, we have reserved watch rooms for each event. Please RSVP via Symplicity, if you have any questions, reach out to Mahrya in the career center.

Every fifteen minutes, the judges will move to another table allowing you to meet up to 8-10 judges in just one hour.

The event will close with a networking reception for participating lawyers, law students and judges. We are honored by the participation of so many judges from the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, District, Magistrate, and Bankruptcy Judges from the Eastern District of Missouri, Southern District of Illinois, Central District of Illinois, Eastern District of Arkansas and Southern District of Indiana.

Rising 3Ls, Apply to the Share the Wealth Judicial Clerkship Program | 7.6

Rising 3Ls are encouraged to apply to the Share the Wealth Judicial Clerkship Program by July 6th. The Share the Wealth Judicial Clerkship Program is a first of its kind referral program run by judges. Ten Federal District Court Judges, one Federal Magistrate Judge, and one Federal Bankruptcy Judge will be conducting a round of interviews in connection with Just the Beginning–A Pipeline Organization’s Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program.

Participating judges will:

  • screen qualified law student applicants,
  • conduct panel interviews with twenty (20) students, and
  • consider them for full-time clerkship positions.

At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested information on applicants through JTB.

Apply online through OSCAR before July 6th. Read more detailed information here.

Seen & Heard | A New Format for Judicial Conversations | 3.29

This Monday, March 29th, students have the opportunity to dialogue with Judge Jay Zainey of the Eastern District of Louisiana, and then view the docket he presides over in the Western District of Texas.

This three-part opportunity offers a glimpse into how the law is applied in a border state. Students are encouraged to both join at 2:45pm CT to discuss the day’s docket with Judge Zainey and then move Zoom rooms to watch how his honor engages with hearings starting at 3:15pm.

Attending the entire court room proceedings is not required. After the two-hours of courtroom viewing has ended, Judge Zainey will take questions and hear response to the day’s work for those students who are still engaged.

To keep the events secure, all links and passcodes are located in Symplicity. RSVP in advance.
