REMINDER | 2024 2L Summer Public Interest Program (SPIP) Application is OPEN

The 2024 2L Summer Public Interest Program (SPIP) Application is OPEN. Second-year students in need who work in eligible non-profit or government law positions full-time for a minimum of six weeks (roughly 200 hours) over the summer are eligible to apply for summer funding through a competitive application process. Most awards are $3,500, although there are a few larger awards. You are encouraged to apply, even if you have not settled on summer plans. You can always withdraw your application later.

SPIP is a modest award intended to help cover modest living expenses. SPIP is not comparable to the pay at firm jobs and is not free money. You must fulfill the SPIP requirements outlined in the SPIP Information Guide. It will never be to your disadvantage to apply for outside funding, and doing so is encouraged.

Because 2L funding is competitive, students are encouraged to ensure their applications are strong and demonstrate a commitment to a career in public interest. Set up an appointment via Symplicity to have your application materials reviewed by a Career Strategist before you hit submit so that you can stand out as a strong candidate.

ACCESS THE 2L APPLICATION HERE. The application closes on Wednesday, Mar. 20, 2024, at 5:00 PM.

1L/2L Virtual Writing Workshop w/ Faegre Feb. 8

Getting Started: How to Approach a New Legal Writing Assignment

Hosted by Julie Schrager, Legal Writing Coach & Advisor and Mary Hershewe, Associate, Product Liability and Mass Torts

As law students and as lawyers, you will regularly be taking on new cases or matters. Many of them will require you to research and write about new issues – topics you don’t know anything about. In this presentation, we’ll discuss strategies to help you get started when you receive a new assignment, including identifying the issues, figuring out an effective research strategy, organizing your thinking, and outlining your memo or brief.

Julie Schrager is Faegre Drinker’s legal writing coach and advisor and has been working with summer associates and newer lawyers for fifteen years.  Before that, she practiced law at a large D.C. law firm and at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston and taught legal writing at Chicago-Kent College of Law.

The Association of Corporate Counsel St. Louis has extended the deadline for its Summer 2024 Diversity Summer Internship Program to February 9. The Program places diverse students who have successfully completed their first year of law school in the legal department of a corporation.

Aimed at providing students with exposure to and experience in in-house practice, the program is also designed to open opportunities to populations within law schools that may lack access to and/or knowledge of in-house legal practice, such as students from demographic groups who are under-represented in the legal profession and students whose family backgrounds lack in professional careers, college degrees or exposure to the law.
