As the Power & Utility Industry continues to evolve, Lazard remains focused on the progression of Alternative Energy and its price competitiveness with conventional generation. In that regard, we have always believed that an essential question is how the current and projected costs of various Alternative Energy technologies compare to those of conventional generation and to each other. Our most recent analysis on this topic—Lazard’s Levelized Cost of Energy v12.0, or “LCOE”—was published November 2018.
In addition, we remain cognizant that a central determinant of the continued proliferation of increasingly low-cost, albeit intermittent, Alternative Energy technologies is the ability to store the energy they produce. In that regard, and building on our previous work on this topic, we have prepared Lazard’s Levelized Cost of Storage v4.0,1 or “LCOS”—to analyze the cost effectiveness, identifiable revenue potential and underlying value of various energy storage technologies within a range of applications.
Reflecting Lazard’s commitment to the sectors in which we participate, we have been publishing our LCOE analysis since 2008 and our LCOS analysis since 2015. The LCOE provides a comparative cost-based analysis for various generation technologies on a $/MWh basis and includes selected sensitivities and related analyses. In addition to providing a market-based indication of actual cash costs and use cases available to illustrative energy storage systems, the LCOS identifies potential sources of revenue available to such systems and provides a framework for analyzing potential project economics.
