It may seem like all fun and games, but summer social events through your firm or summer organization are an important part of makings sure you impress your employers and receive an offer to return. Here are some tips to ensure your success this summer (and beyond!):
- Attend as many as possible. Even if you are an introvert by nature make an effort to attend as many events as possible. Don’t consider the events as optional – your enthusiastic commitment to attending these events will be noticed and appreciated (as will your less than enthusiastic attendance or avoidance).
- Branch out and meet someone new. Introduce yourself to new people at the events including the other summer associates. Don’t simply focus on just following the partners. While the events are great time to network with partners, you don’t want to only speak to them. There is great value to getting to know associates whether it be through big events or small lunches. When you start practicing, one of your strongest contacts will be the junior and mid-level associates.
- Be prepared. If you are invited to lunch with an associate, make sure you know a little bit about them. If the event requires an RSVP, make sure you do so in a timely fashion.
- Be memorable for the right reasons. Your reputation will precede you in the firm. Think of your summer as a 12 week long interview. You want to make sure you are someone that your future employer can picture introducing to clients knowing that you can make a good impression.
The primary purpose of these events is truly a good faith effort by the firm or organization to showcase that you are welcome and persuade you to join the firm or organization following graduation. Enjoy yourself and enjoy this summer, but always in a professional and controlled manner.
