+ CALENDAR: FBI Legal Honors Internship Program | Application Opens 8.29

The FBI’s Summer 2023 Honors Legal Internship Program will be open from August 29th – September 18, 2022.

To apply head over to www.fbi.gov or click HERE. This is a great opportunity for 1Ls and 2Ls who may be looking for a paid internship for the of Summer 2023 in one of 56 FBI field offices nationwide or the FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Here are some of the assignments former interns performed: (1)  briefings on SCOTUS and US Court of Appeals criminal and national security cases to our FBI agents and intelligence analysts; (2) briefings on state law issues relative to peace officer status/mental health issues/active shooter matters and concealed gun carrying; (3) researching FBI and information sharing post 9/11 with state, local and private sector partners; (4) participating in two physical fitness programs per week – team building; (5) participating in firearms safety and defensive tactics demonstrations; and (6) visiting the federal/state judges, federal prosecutors, state prosecutors, and public defenders.

AIR FORCE JAG CORPS 2023 SPRING EXTERNSHIP | Application Period Sept. 1-15th

The Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps is seeking applications for our unpaid 2023 spring externship program. As an extern, you will gain hands-on legal experience in diverse legal practice areas while learning more about the Air Force JAG Corps.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Externs work under attorney supervision at Air Force and Space Force locations throughout the world. An extern’s duties vary based on location, but duties typically include researching legal issues, writing legal briefs and opinions, conducting investigations, interviewing witnesses, and performing other tasks as required. Externs support attorneys in numerous practice areas including criminal law, legal assistance, civil and administrative law, labor and employment law, international and operational law, space and cyber law, contract and fiscal law, medical law, claims and tort litigation, and environmental law.

REQUIREMENTS

• United States citizen (birth or naturalization)
• Enrolled in an ABA-approved law school
• Able to obtain law school permission for externship (credit is authorized)
• Available to work part time (8+ hours) or full time (for up to 40 hours) per week for 14-16 weeks
• Be able to obtain a Common Access Card through a security clearance

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Application Window: September 1 –15, 2022. Only applications submitted during the open application window will be accepted. Apply by submitting your application to the Air Force JAG Corps, Professional Development Directorate by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Thursday, September 15, 2022. Email your application to airforcejagrecruiting@gmail.com. We will not accept late submissions or applications that do not comply with the below instructions.

Combine all required application documents into one PDF. The email subject line and the name of your PDF must be labeled “Last name, First name, 2023 Spring Externship Application (Law School Year – i.e. 1L, 2L, or 3L).

All required document MUST be combined in one PDF in the order listed below:

  1. Resume – limited to 1 page and must include current contact information and GPAs for undergraduate, graduate (if applicable), and law school.
  2. Motivational Statement – limited to 1 page, double-spaced, 1-in margins, and 12point Times New Roman font. Your motivational
    statement should explain why you are applying for an externship
    position with the Air Force JAG Corps.
  3. Geographic/Base Preferences Memorandum – limited to 1 page. List your anticipated availability (start/end dates and hours per week). Second, list up to five Air Force/Space Force base location preferences. Include the specific base and city/state. You can find base locations at https://www.airforce.com/lifestyle/locations and https://www.spaceforce.mil/About-Us/Space-Force-Locations. You may also request a remote externship as one of your preferences (NOTE: slots for remote externships are limited). Applicants may include a brief justification for each location preference (optional). Lastly, include the following privacy act waiter statement: “I agree to the use of my Privacy Act Information in the USAF externship application process. I understand those transmitting personal information will exercise caution and adequately safeguard it in accordance with applicable Air Force instructions.”
  4. Undergraduate, Graduate (if applicable), and Law School Transcripts –
    unofficial copies acceptable.
  5. Writing Sample – limited to 5 pages, double-spaced, 1-in margins, and 12-point Times New Roman font. Do not include an introduction or summary page.

Externships are unpaid positions, but students may receive school credit. The Air Force will not pay for housing or travel expenses. Externs must be able to secure their own housing and pay for travel to and from the externship location.

Student registration for this year’s virtual event is now open. The event will require a single registration. The base registration fee for both the conference and career fair portions of the event will be $25.00 (this is a non-refundable fee). As a reminder, the Equal Justice Works Conference will take place on Wednesday, September 21 – Friday, September 23, and the Equal Justice Works Career Fair will be held on October 20-22.

Key dates to keep in mind:

  • Deadline for Applying to Prescheduled Interviews
    Students must apply for prescheduled interviews by Thursday, September 15 at 6 p.m. ET. Employers will then have until Wednesday, September 28 to submit their interview selections. Please note: It may take several hours before your event registration is confirmed and you are able to view and apply for available positions. Please do not wait until September 15 to register for the event if you intend to participate in the prescheduled interview process.
  • Prescheduled Interview Sign-Up Begins
    Students will have been notified of their prescheduled interview status (unless otherwise contacted) and will be able to sign up for specific interview times beginning on Thursday, September 29. Interview times must be finalized by Wednesday, October 12 at 6 p.m. ET. All interview times on the career fair database will be listed in ET.
  • Career Fair Registration Deadline
    Event registration for the career fair will close on Thursday, October 13 at 6 p.m. ET for those students interested in participating in informal, one-on-one “table talk” discussions with employers.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of the Solicitor (SOL) is currently seeking applications for Law Clerks and Attorneys in both the national office and several regional offices from student. The Honors Program in the Office of the Solicitor (SOL) a unique opportunity to help interpret and enforce a broad range of labor and employment laws while working in one of the largest legal offices in the federal government. We invite you to share this opportunity with your network.

Honors Attorneys in the national office will develop skills handling a broad variety of legal assignments. Honors Attorneys have argued cases in federal courts of appeals on pension and wage and hour law, arbitrated and resolved internal union grievances, drafted critical new mine safety regulation, and many other legal matters. Honors Attorneys in the National Office may receive assignments from SOL’s Regional Offices, which typically involve trial work. 

In the regional offices, Honors Attorneys develop trial litigation skills working with all the statutes commonly enforced by the Department of Labor. Receiving guidance from experienced courtroom attorneys, a regional Honors Program attorney will typically carry a varied caseload from beginning to end: analyzing an investigative file, filing a complaint, engaging in negotiations and discovery, preparing briefs and arguing motions, and serving as lead counsel in cases that go to trial.

2023 Summer Program
The IRS Office of Chief Counsel’s Summer Legal Program provides exposure to the Office by enabling primarily second-year law students to work under the supervision, and with the assistance of, experienced tax lawyers. The training and work experience provides developmental assignments and helps prepare law students for a career as a tax lawyer and gives them an excellent view of what the practice of law is like at the Off ice of Chief Counsel. In the National Off ice, law students typically take part in a variety of educational and social events. 2023 Honors Program

The IRS Office of Chief Counsel’s Honors Program is a highly competitive program available to primarily third-year law students, graduating Tax LL.M. students and judicial clerks. The program offers entry level positions that provide the opportunity to acquire significant training and experience in tax law. The positions are open to individuals each year who have superior academic qualifications or relevant experience to the work of the Office of Chief Counsel.

  • Appointments will be made to a Law Clerk at the GS-11 or GS-12 for 14-months
  • Admission and passing the state bar exam must be completed within 14 months of appointment to Law Clerk in order to be eligible for conversion to attorney
  • Participants may be converted to an entry-level attorney position after admittance to a State Bar and demonstration of satisfactory employment during the interim period.
  • If admitted to a State Bar before the Final Job Offer, appointments may be made to a General Attorney (Tax) GS-11/12/13 (with promotion potential to the GS-14).
