Spotlight: Intellectual Property

Our intellectual property (IP) team helps leading technology organizations do what they do best: innovate. Together, we provide inventors, brands, and high-tech companies alike with multidisciplinary, end-to-end IP legal solutions, including strategic counseling, enforcement, procurement, and transactional.

Our national, cross-disciplinary team of intellectual property attorneys, patent agents, engineers, and other professionals combines the technical knowledge, hands-on business experience, and legal insight needed to help our clients manage, acquire, protect, and leverage the full value of their vital IP assets — including patents, design rights, trade secrets, trademarks and trade dress, and copyrights.

We have one of the leading and most sophisticated cross-technology Patent Counseling and Prosecution Practices globally, made up of a highly diverse team of attorneys, agents, and engineers whose advanced education and professional experience in key fields enables us to understand our clients’ innovations and business objectives inside and out while handling their sophisticated and complex needs across the full IP lifecycle.

Johnson Controls–Foley IP Law Fellowship

Two leaders in IP — Johnson Controls and Foley — have partnered to create the Johnson Controls–Foley IP Law Fellowship for law students interested in a career in IP law. The fellowship combines two outstanding internships — one in-house with Johnson Controls’ legal department and the other with Foley. Importantly, it does so with one exciting outcome in mind: the opportunity to become a new IP associate with Foley upon law school graduation.

Our Platform

Foley is an Am Law 50 law firm consistently ranked among top-tier practices. With over 1,100 lawyers in 25 offices across the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Asia, our market-leading platform includes Corporate, Intellectual Property, and Litigation.

Adding depth to our bench strength, we focus on four primary sectors: Energy, Health Care & Life Sciences, Innovative Technology, and Manufacturing. We’re taking the knowledge we have from our primary sectors and bringing it to our clients in a consultative manner. Our aim is to increasingly see things from their perspective and bring our legal skills to the forefront.

DEI at Foley

We endeavor to be a community where people can reach their full potential. For that reason, we’re relentlessly focused on creating a workplace where everyone can bring their authentic self regardless of ethnicity, background, belief, orientation, gender expression, or personal need. To achieve this, we’re weaving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into the very fabric of the firm and investing in and supporting all our talent. We strive for diversity not only in terms of our people but also in the unique ideas and perspectives each person brings to the firm. Learn More About Our DEI Efforts

One of the many ways we demonstrate our commitment to fostering diverse legal talent is through our involvement with the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). Foley is proud to be an LCLD Member organization and to have been a 2022 Compass Award winner. First-year law students who receive and accept an offer from Foley have the opportunity to apply for the 1L LCLD Scholars Program where they will receive valuable professional experience and unique opportunities for career development and relationship building. We also offer a Diversity Fellowship Program for second-year law students. This opportunity for 2Ls who share our values and demonstrate a commitment to promoting DEI includes a $50,000 fellowship.
