It will seem daunting to balance studies with gaining legal experience while in law school. But accomplishing both pays large dividends when it comes to getting your dream job. One of the key actions to take to ensure success during a job hunt is to develop a professional network that extends beyond your peers.
What does that look like? Ben Nelson explains in detail in his article, “How to Get the Most out of Law School with Extracurricular Activities.” At a high level, this is what he recommends current law students do:
- Become an intern
- Volunteer your time
- Act as a TA
Each has a benefit for you-gaining practical skills, witnessing lawyers in their day-to-day, deepening your relationship with a professor, and more. And one may better fit your schedule than another. The important thing is to seek out and evaluate such opportunities so that who you know in the field grows in tandem with what you know about the law.
