About Stoel Rives LLP 2022 Summer Associate Program
Our summer program is designed to immerse you in our culture and the practice of law at Stoel Rives from day one. We are proud to offer summer associates well-rounded opportunities including robust training and development, interesting work assignments, mentorship, relationship building, community engagement, and genuine fun.
Skill Building
At Stoel Rives, the summer associate program is the catalyst for the next generation of attorneys. From day 1, students will join the team and partake in enriching opportunities to work with attorneys in core practice groups:
- Corporate
- Environmental
- Energy
- Labor & Employment
- Litigation
- Real Estate
- Technology & Intellectual Property
As a summer associate, you will grow through work assignments such as drafting transactional documents, researching and writing legal research memos, drafting significant portions of briefs, framing discovery requests, and learning the mechanics of closing deals. We will also include you in unique client opportunities such as meetings, hearings, closings, depositions, and trials.
Mentorship & Integration
Summer associate mentorship is the cornerstone of our program. In addition to feedback from attorneys to help you grow your legal skills, each summer associate receives an associate-level Mentor and partner-level Coach. They will help you understand the nuances of legal practice, provide advice on how to utilize the firm’s resources and opportunities, and be there to help you thrive.
Throughout the summer, you will also participate in social events to help you build lifelong relationships. In the past, these have involved outdoor adventures, the arts, community engagement, sporting events, and of course, amazing food.
Skills that will Help you Succeed
We encourage applications from students with diverse backgrounds, experiences, skills, and interests. We value many things such as professional experience prior to attending law school, community engagement work, or participation in law school activities such as student organizations, Law Review, or Moot Court. If the below sounds like you and you are eager to grow, we encourage you to apply:
- Interest in one or more of the firm’s core practice groups;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Good judgment, responsiveness, and perseverance;
- Strong intellectual curiosity;
- Self-motivation;
- A commitment to client service and team success; and
- Demonstrated academic achievement.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Stoel Rives places a high priority on attracting and retaining lawyers with different backgrounds and life experiences. This makes us better and happier as people, as an organization, and as legal advisers. We maintain an active firmwide DE&I Committee, Associates Committee, Pro Bono Committee, Affinity Groups, and Parenting Circle groups, which summer associates are introduced to during their summer experience.
As part of the firm’s commitment to DE&I, you will learn about and contribute to the firm’s many initiatives, including our partnership with Diversity Lab as one of five founding Move the Needle Fund firms. Our efforts with Diversity Lab include certification under the Mansfield Rule, to boost the representation of diverse lawyers in our firm’s leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for opportunities, along with participation in the OnRamp Fellowship for legal returners and the OnTrack Sponsorship program.
You’ll also have the chance to give back to your local community through pro bono and volunteer work. Previous summer associate community engagement projects include running a fundraiser for a children’s literacy nonprofit and a back-to-school initiative for a women and children’s housing organization. As a practicing attorney, you will be encouraged to continue this work through activities such as leading pro bono matters and nonprofit board leadership.
Well-Being
Stoel is a proud participant in the ABA Well-Being Pledge, strongly believing that the well-being of employees is paramount to the success of the firm. The firm’s Well-Being Committee spearheads wellness initiatives throughout the year, to foster employee mental, physical, and financial well-being. In addition, the firm’s Culture Committee supports the firm’s mission, vision, and values in bringing together spectacular client service and employee job satisfaction.
