You read that correctly. Diversity applications are open, and it is okay to wait to submit your application materials. This is a busy time of year for WashULaw students, with the exam period starting on Monday. It can be difficult to juggle the stress of drafting outlines, trying to retain a semester’s worth of knowledge, and finding the time to eat and sleep. If you are overwhelmed, there is no need to add the stress of applying to diversity positions just yet.
Sites such as the Leadership Counsel on Legal Diversity (LCLD) have opened their 1L LCLD Scholar opportunities. Diversity positions are being listed on Symplicity daily. With the influx of job postings, it’s easy to feel pressure to get your application materials submitted as quickly as possible so that you do not miss out on a potential job opportunity. However, your chances of landing such a position will not decrease if you chose to focus on what is important – your studies – and hit submit once you get through finals. In fact, some of the deadlines for these positions aren’t until early-January or later.
When you are ready, the Career Center is here to help you finalize your resume, cover letter, and diversity statement. In addition, over Winter Break, the Career Center will be hosting virtual workshops on all facets of the 1L job search. You can also email any Career Center strategist to set up virtual appointments during break. There is no rush to hit submit.
Inhale. Exhale. Go study.
