Should You Apply? The Answer is Always YES! BY PCA Celia Shen
Applying for 1L big law positions is an invaluable step in preparing for your 2L summer job hunt for several reasons:
- Familiarization with the Application Process: It gets you acquainted with the law firm application process and ensures that your materials are prepared and ready to go. This preparation puts you a step ahead when you start searching for a 2L summer job.
- Interview Experience: While 1L big law positions are indeed competitive, firms still conduct a large number of screening and callback interviews. Even if you don’t secure a position, these interviews are golden opportunities to connect with professionals in the firm. What better way to network than by having a one-on-one conversation with a practicing lawyer?
- I applied for 1L summer positions and went through the interview process. Although I didn’t secure a job that summer, the firm invited me back for direct callback interviews for the 2L summer positions. These interviews are not just about securing a job but also about learning more about the firm and networking within the legal community.
- If you’ve interviewed for a 1L summer position, this experience can be a valuable addition to your cover letters for 2L applications. Mentioning that you’ve spoken with someone at the firm and discussing specific insights or topics covered during that conversation can make your application stand out.
