My name is Grace Taylor and I was a legal intern with the City of St. Louis Law Department my 1L summer. The Law Department largely represents the City of St. Louis in litigation defense. What really stood out to me about my time there was the fact that from day one I was doing real, substantive work. No, really—after I finished my orientation materials in the morning, I was handed a research project right off the bat for an appellate case. Over the course of the summer, I worked with nearly every attorney in the office on issues ranging from personal injury to employment discrimination.

The work I did with the City improved not only my skills in research and writing, but also my confidence in my work product. I was able to experience many areas of law and seek out work that I found interesting, working closely with attorneys on motions, briefs, and discovery. I was also invited to attend mediations, depositions, and hearings, which introduced me to some of the more practical elements of being a lawyer.

I highly suggest interning with the City to anyone who wants the opportunity to explore many areas of litigation and contribute substantially to the projects they’re working on. The skills I learned while working in the Law Department have been invaluable throughout the rest of my law school career.
