SUCCESSFUL SUMMER TIP #5 – DIRECT APPLY TO YOUR TARGET EMPLOYERS

After you have:

  • Research potential 2L summer employers;
  • Update your resume and cover letter;
  • Email your updated resume and cover letter to the Career Center and received comments; and
  • Finalize your application materials with your cumulative first year GPA and awards.

Now it is time to direct apply to your target employers.  Your cover letters should be individualized for each employer and addressed to the recruiter identified on the organization’s website or on the NALP Directory.  Contact the Career Center if you need assistance identifying the correct addressee.

If you will be in the location of the employer’s office during the summer, indicate that fact in your cover letter and offer to meet during the time you will be in town.  If you are also applying to that organization through OCI or the formal off campus interviewing programs, you should indicate that in your cover letter.

Even if you are applying to the organization through OCI or the formal off campus recruiting programs, it is still important to direct apply as well.  Direct applying conveys to the employer that you are truly interested in their organization, and may even lead to interviews and offers before OCI even begins. If you have any questions, stop in, call (314-935-6451) or email anytime.
