Summer is upon us and that means Summer receptions will be starting shortly. Receptions are a great way to get a feel for the culture of the firm and also increase your contacts in the legal community. These employer-sponsored networking events allow you to engage with employers in a more relaxed setting. RSVP early and make sure that you follow through with your RSVP.
These receptions can be beneficial even if you are focused on public interest. Many of the attorneys that are currently at firms may have worked at public interest or government agencies. Additionally, many of the attorneys you will meet at these receptions do pro bono work alongside the public interest attorneys with whom you are looking to connect!
Networking is a skill that improves as you gain more confidence and attend more functions. Check out our Networking guide for some tips, but here are a few quick tips:
- RSVP and then follow through with your RSVP. Employers can see if you don’t show up! Make sure you are on time. Don’t be too early, but don’t pop in 5 minutes before the event ends.
- Bring a wing person, but don’t travel in a pack. You are attending this event to meet new connections, not sit in the corner with old ones.
- You can absolutely eat something. Food is a great conversation starter.
- Do some research before you attend. You want to put your best foot forward and showcase that you care about making a good impression. If the firm sends you a list of attorneys that will be attending, it is in your best interest to review that so you can have some great questions ready.
- Be chatty, but don’t monopolize the conversation. Employers like to see how you engage with those around you – not just the people who are in charge. Be kind to your fellow law, students and if the opportunity to engage others in a conversation arises, take it. You won’t diminish your presence, but will only highlight your confidence.
