So you attended the 2020 1L Employer Showcase. You met employers, nailed your elevator pitch, left a great impression. These are wonderful achievements, but don’t stop there.

Certainly the Employer Showcase was a memorable night. But it is also a momentum building night. Today, this weekend, and next week are the times to capitalize on the work you put in to building your network and to expanding it further.

How can you keep the positive movement going? By following these three steps:

1.) Capture What You Remember.

Ideally, you took notes as the Showcase unfolded, dipping back into the “Green Room” to write down things you wanted to remember. But if you didn’t, take time now to look at the cards you collected and to reflect on the conversations you held. Jot down notes while the night is in the very near past.

2.) Write Thank Yous.

It is very important that you make timely contact with employers-this could be handwritten or an email; however, an email will be more rapid. Thank yous are multipurpose: 1.) They show you know etiquette; 2.) They serve as a way to illustrate your writing ability; and 3.) They solidify the employer’s memory of you. In your note:

  • Be appreciative of their time,
  • Mention something memorable you discussed, and
  • Include a sentence about the future and your plans “I will be applying to your firm after speaking with you,” etc.

3.) Follow Up with Grades.

Consult your the list of employers you have previously applied to, identifying ones who do not know your recently released GPA. It is acceptable (and encouraged!) to reach out and update employers after you know your grades. This is a natural way to re-initiate the ongoing conversation with them after you have applied. Use it to your advantage.
