Hannah Arterian was a pioneer. As a law student, she was the first woman to hold an editorial position on the Iowa Law Review. She later returned to University of Iowa’s law school, where she was one of the first women to teach at the college. She went on to become the first woman to serve as ASU College of Law’s associate dean and the only woman on the college’s law faculty. And she was the 11th dean of Syracuse University’s College of Law — only the second woman appointed to the position. Hannah was indeed a trailblazer.
But at AccessLex Institute®, Hannah was even more than that. She was a distinguished member of the Board of Directors from 2011 to 2020, including two terms as Board Chair. She was an ever-present participant at the Company’s annual events, expressing that it was her obligation to support her financial aid office and to better understand the financial issues her students faced. And she was a strong advocate for advancing our mission — taking special interest in the creation of our MAX by AccessLex® personal finance program for law students, now in its 6th year and offered at 187 law schools, serving tens of thousands of students each year.
Though Hannah passed earlier this year, her legacy will live on with the MAX by AccessLex® Hannah R. Arterian Memorial Scholarship. Annually, one 1L MAX participant who completes the eight-part Financial Foundations course and attends at least two MAX events will be automatically entered to win a $50,000 scholarship toward their remaining law school tuition. The first drawing of the Scholarship will take place on May 1, 2023 and will thereby stand apart from the annual MAX by AccessLex Grand Prize Scholarship Drawing on April 1.
