2Ls and 3Ls: The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) is a two-hour, 60 question multiple-choice ethics examination. Passing this exam is required for admission to the bar in almost every state. The MPRE is administered in March, August, and November at various testing centers. The purpose of the MPRE is to measure knowledge and understanding of established standards related to the professional conduct of lawyers. Though not required, many students believe it is beneficial to wait to take the MPRE until after taking or while taking an ethics course. Please note that some jurisdictions require a certain number of credit hours before the applicant may take the MPRE. Visit the NCBE website for jurisdiction-specific information.
