The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”) and Edward Jones seek first and second year law students for our 2019 Joint Legal Externship Program. The Externship is comprised of two parts: (1) an externship (full-time) with FINRA’s Litigation & Counsel group in their Washington, DC office for the full Summer 2019 term; and (2) an externship (part-time 12 or more hours per week) with Edward Jones’ Legal Division group in their St. Louis, MO office for the Fall 2019 term. In order to participate in the FINRA – Edward Jones Joint Externship Program, the successful candidate must apply for and receive a Public Interest Fellowship for the FINRA portion of this Program, and receive academic credit through the Lawyering Practice Externship for the Edward Jones portion of this Program. The successful candidate will receive a $2000 stipend from Edward Jones to defray living expenses for the summer term in Washington D.C. Job Summary:
To assist with legal research, writing and policy issues, as well as related support in connection with the work of various legal functions. The Externship Program is designed for law students who have an interest in securities regulation. Through this program, externs will achieve an understanding and working knowledge of: (1) FINRA’s role and responsibilities in the securities industry with exposure to sales practice issues, routine examinations and the new member application process and, (2) understand the legal and regulatory aspects of Edward Jones in the current marketplace.
Essential Job Functions:
- To perform legal research, analysis and writing.
- Tasks will include assisting, as necessary, with: researching and compiling needed information and legal and factual research based on federal, state securities laws and FINRA rules.
- Provide other support, as needed in connection with issues, policies, and other matters arising in FINRA’s Regulatory Operations programs or at Edward Jones.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must be pursuing a law degree with an interest in securities regulation;
- Relevant experience in a regulatory or legal environment with current working knowledge of the federal securities laws, particularly the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, is preferred.
- Working knowledge of legal research engines such as Lexis Nexis and ability to perform efficient legal research.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong desire to experience working on both sides of legal and regulatory practices.
Working Conditions:
- Standard business office environment.
- Use of desktop PC is required, as is familiarity with Microsoft Word.
